This comic was the result of the recent announcement that Marisa Tomei will be playing Aunt May in the new Spider-Man franchise that Marvel and Sony are working together to create. It got quite a strong reaction, because, well, Marisa Tomei, despite being 50 and therefore a totally appropriate age for the role, is really friggin’ hot. It’s not exactly a problem, in and of itself. It’s just incredibly weird because Aunt May has usually been depicted as a haggard old woman who appears to be in her 90s, or at the very least her 70s. And the truth of the matter is that the age gap between her and Peter has always been far too extreme anyway, which is why I completely understood the movie toward a somewhat younger Aunt May when Sally Field was cast in the Amazing Spider-Man films. But Marvel has been very vocal about the fact that this new series of Spider-Man films will actually push for a teenage Peter Parker, wheras the past two actors to portray him started out in their 20s. And with the emphasis on a younger Peter comes a younger Aunt May, apparently. Like I said, it’s not a bad thing. It’s just really going to fuck with my psyche that I’m probably going to be having dirty thoughts about Aunt May, of all characters.
